The Family of the Dost.
The influence of Dost Mohammed, Amir of Afghanistan for four decades, towered over relations with the British. Up to his death in 1863, he forged a sense of Afghan unity whilst guiding a difficult path between British and Russian imperial expansionism and frequent provocations by both of them.
