  1. The British Are Coming! Regal Portraits of Henry VIII & Elizabeth I Visit for “Tudors to Windsors”

Sep 14, 2018 - Queen Elizabeth I (“The Ditchley Portrait”) Henry VIII’s daughter, Elizabeth I, asserted her right to rule through art and adornment, and she created a model of rule that skillfully offset the presentation of her femininity with powerful father-daughter duo: a vivid portrait of King Henry VIII by Hans Holbein, who for a time served as the personal painter to the sovereign; and Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger’s extraordinary painting of Queen Elizabeth I.

  2. Walk Away Renee

Oct 31, 2012 - I knew at some point that I wanted to tell stories in some realm of experimental form, even though back then I probably couldn't exactly articulate that. JC: Gosh, I hope not—ha ha. If anything, I am segueing into a completely different territory very soon. I don't reckon this will be anything like the Seven Up series, ha! When I was about 12, I was hanging out with these older film snob types in Houston (have no idea how I even met them) and they exposed me to the likes of Paul Morrissey and John Waters, etc.

  3. A Force of Color: Painting-in-Action with GONZO247

May 13, 2020 - I grew up in Eastwood, a neighborhood in Houston’s East End. When I became more established as an artist, I crossed paths with the Eastwood Academy to do art projects with the students. I used this inspiration, tied it to what I do, and translated to Plexiglas. Why is a live demonstration important to you? I think the real art is the process. What you end up with is residual to the energy and work. I was never taken to museums or galleries. The only art I had access to was on the street, when I was a captive audience in the back seat of my parents’ car. That mural inspired me and other kids to become artists.

  4. #TogetherAtHome with DJ Sun

May 10, 2020 - Once I graduated, I remained, and as I pursued the field of music through DJ-ing, hosting a radio show, producing live shows, and building a studio to produce music, I found immense support from Houston audiences and never had I tapped the network of artists I had built, including King Britt, DJ Day, Rich Medina, DJ Nickodemus, and Quantic. I came to Houston at age 19 to attend the University of Houston.

  5. Lifelong Learning at the Glassell School of Art

Nov 18, 2019 - I chose to relocate in Houston, and I worked for Shell for 34 years as a refinery operator. When I retired, I wanted to do art and see if I was good at it. You have to figure out, “What do I see?” and “What do I want to say about myself?” I paint and I draw every day. My life is now filled with making art, with being creative. My story began in New York City, where I was born and raised. I went into the U.S. Air Force and after that studied to be a commercial photographer—until the cold weather drove me out!

  6. 3 Questions for Artist Dario Robleto

Aug 12, 2019 - Left to right: I Wish I Could Give Aretha All the R.E.S.P.E.C.T. When I first discovered DJ culture and its core technique of sampling, I knew I had found a worldview, a philosophy of life. She Will Ever Need I Wish I Could Give Kraftwerk All the Soul They Will Ever Need I Wish I Could Give Maria All the Love She Will Ever Need LEARN MORE • See details about the trophies here.

  7. For the Love of Art

Apr 24, 2012 - Coming to live in Houston, I began researching ways to be connected to the MFAH, and I learned about the docent program. I had the privilege of seeing him create the work, so it is especially meaningful to me. CZ: The blessing I have to touch students' lives in some way in their approach to art.

  8. A Noir to Remember

Sep 17, 2018 - I thought he was wonderful. Why did you pick Laura for Movies Houstonians Love? When I first saw Laura, I was 15 years old and a sophomore at Lamar High School. I think that’s where my love of film began. I also remember my parents taking me to a matinee of Gone with the Wind at the downtown Loews Theater when I was about 10! Yes, I was at several parties with her in private homes and clubs. The most meaningful conversation we had was when I asked about Dana Andrews, her Laura costar.

  9. Meet the MFAH: Patrick Palmer, Dean of the Glassell Studio School

Apr 9, 2020 - I surprised myself in trying to narrow my favorite works down to five; I would have been more comfortable with 25! I picked the works that represent true, lifetime masterpieces by each of the artists. This July marks my 10th year as dean, but I started teaching at Glassell almost 30 years ago. I was initially hired to teach the “Investigations in Charcoal” workshop, my proverbial “foot in the door.” I still teach a couple classes, but mostly I spend my day building future course catalogs, studying the ever-changing demands of a varied curriculum, and making myself available to students and faculty.

  10. Bayou Bend at 50: A Longtime Docent Tells Her Story

Mar 3, 2016 - I do not remember anything about the interview except the first thing I said was, “Oh, you are so young!” and then I thought to myself, “Well, that was not the right thing to say!” I can still hear the sound of the canvas canopy loudly flapping about. I remember being completely in awe of the moment and of the many important people there. I also remember being in the house that day. I could not believe it—he was someone whose books I had read and heard great stories about, and he was on the floor and I was standing right there! Fifty years later, you’re still an active Bayou Bend docent.
