Art Encounters | Collective Thoughts

Included in today’s Fall Festival “Dream with Alebrijes”

Looking for a new art experience? Drop-in Art Encounters programs, led by artists and inspired by art at the MFAH, focus on creating community. The way you participate is up to you! Take an active role, or simply observe.

At this Art Encounters session, join in creating Collective Thoughts, a collaborative sculpture illustrating the theme of humans coexisting with Mother Earth. The project is inspired by Zulma Vega’s sculptural works and the exhibition Golden Worlds: The Portable Universe of Indigenous Colombia.

Responding to prompts about your relationship to nature and community, offer your thoughts by writing or drawing onto various golden materials that are then integrated into a wire-basketlike structure. Supplies are provided.

About the Artist
Colombian multidisciplinary artist Zulma Vega moved to Houston in 2012. Influenced by psychological and spiritual matters, her art incorporates manufactured materials such as cement and plexiglass with organic ones like wood and stones. Vega’s work encourages viewers to contemplate ancestors, intimate inquiries, hidden feelings, thoughts, and the dynamism of the psyche.
