Islamic Arts Family Day features activities for all ages. Generously sponsored by H-E-B, this event is presented in partnership with the Islamic Arts Society of Houston and Ismaili Council for Southwestern USA. These all-ages activities take inspiration from the Museum’s Art of the Islamic Worlds.
Create
Watch practicing artists as they demonstrate traditional Islamic art-making processes, and try your hand at creating the art yourself!
- Arabic Calligraphy Artists demonstrate the art of Arabic calligraphy and offer complimentary name writing.
- Ceramic Painting Iznik pottery is a decorated ceramic from Turkey known for its white, blue, green, and red designs and its patterns of flowers, vines, and plain lines. Families are invited to observe this delicate process and paint their own ceramic tile.
- Ebru Paper Marbling Popular in Turkey and Central Asia, Ebru paintings are produced using dyes, a water-based solution, and a set of unique tools. Watch as artists create intricate patterns and designs using this mesmerizing process, and use this fascinating technique to create your own art.

Experience traditional music and dance performances presented by the Ismaili Council for Southwestern USA.

Go on a scavenger hunt in the Museum to find works of art in the Hossein Afshar Galleries for Art of the Islamic Worlds.
