Core Program Lecture | Darby English

The 2022–2023 Core Program Lecture Series concludes with this talk by Darby English. The subject is his short book in progress: Uptake, which deals with “ego, otherness, and habit (‘method’) in intellectual work with art.”

English is the Carl Darling Buck Professor of Art History at the University of Chicago, where he is also associate faculty in both the department of visual arts and the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture. His most recent book, To Describe a Life: Notes from the Intersection of Art and Race Terror won two awards, and his previous book, 1971: A Year in the Life of Color includes a chapter on Houston's not-famous-enough exhibition The De Luxe Show. Other books include Among Others: Blackness at MoMA, which English coedited with Charlotte Barat when he was an adjunct curator in MoMA's department of painting and sculpture.
