The 2022–2023 Core Program Lecture Series opens with this talk by artist Karyn Olivier, who has a long career in the realm of public art. Her artistic practice merges multiple histories and collective memory with present-day narratives. Actively engaged in reinterpreting the role of monuments, Olivier has created both temporary and permanent sculptures and installations. With recurring themes of absence, invisibility, and displacement, the artist intervenes in “blind spots”—unseen and unconsidered spaces—drawing attention to the periphery.

About the Speaker
Philadelphia-based artist Karyn Olivier, born in Trinidad and Tobago, is a professor of sculpture at Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University in Philadelphia. Her work has been featured at locations including the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia; Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis; the University of Kentucky; and the Busan Bienniale and Gwangju Biennial in South Korea.
