The MFAH and ALMAAHH announce a call for proposals from Latinx artists in preparation for the Museum’s second “Dream with Alebrijes fall festival. Six Latinx artists will be selected to create alebrijes sculptures for the event to be held on Sunday, November 5, 2023.

The call for artists builds on the success of the 2022 festival, which captured the community’s imagination with six sculptures installed temporarily in Cullen Sculpture Garden at the MFAH. Each sculpture was created by a Houston artist who interpreted the Mexican folk-art tradition of alebrijes.

This year, the MFAH (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston) collaborates with the cultural and visual-arts organization ALMAAHH (Advocates of a Latino Museum of Cultural and Visual Arts & Archive Complex in Houston, Harris County). The organization is calling for Latinx artists who live and work in Houston to submit proposals by July 16, 2023, through the form at the link below.

Proposal Information

Artists are selected by July 31, 2023. The large-scale sculptures go on view at the MFAH from November 4 to November 12. Questions? alebrijecall@almaahh.org

In 2022, about 4,000 people attended the free festival, which was sponsored by H-E-B. The 2023 fall festival again includes music, dance performances, poetry, food vendors, art-making activities, and free admission to the MFAH. The “Dream with Alebrijesfestival celebrates the Museum’s commitment to collecting Latin American art.
