  2. A Weekend with Photographer and Filmmaker Jerry Schatzberg

  3. Art Activity: Let’s Make a Drawing

Sep 24, 2020 - Collaborate with a family member or friend to create ink drawings inspired by Julio Alpuy’s Untitled (Two Structures). Use the family-friendly activity guide and how-to video below to explore shapes and make one-of-a-kind drawings. Alpuy’s early work evolved from the use of heavy impasto in still lifes and landscapes, to a more stylized body of paintings.

  4. A (Virtual) Stroll through Bayou Bend

Apr 11, 2020 - I would especially recommend the Metals Study Room, where you can find answers to questions like “Seriously, a macaroni knife?” and “Why would anyone own a silver megaphone?” Last fall, the MFAH house museum Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens launched a mobile tour of Ima Hogg’s historic 14-acre estate. With the wide use of smartphones, we recognized an opportunity to enhance visitor experiences with text, audio, and video—information that’s especially helpful in a decorative-arts collection.

  5. Collection Spotlight: A Fusion of Forms

Feb 15, 2020 - A Devotion to Michelangelo The base, created in 1878, is clearly by Rodin, who furthered the concept of a vase Carrier-Belleuse had created as a designer at the Minton ceramic factory in England. A Turning Point The sculptures mark a turning point in Rodin’s vision—when he fully focused on natural postures that showed passion, emotion, and character and used textured surfaces to facilitate the interplay of light and shadows The contributions of both artists to this rare work—only five versions are known to survive intact—make it a masterpiece.

  6. Ima Hogg: “Like a Rock Star”

Apr 19, 2016 - She also loved a dish my grandmother made: a ring of white rice and green onions surrounding chicken breasts in a creamy mushroom sauce. That I liked! A favorite memory is during many Azalea Trails, when I sat in the kitchen and unwrapped endless Werther’s hard candies and put them in a bowl. Well, to a child she was intimidating because she was very proper—what we called “a lady.” Remember, when I was born in 1946 she was 64 years old, so in my mind she was always old.

  7. A Weekend of Tantalizing Turkish Cinema

Mar 16, 2015 - The Saturday centerpiece screening is Mix Tape, director Tunç Şahin's film about a romance that takes a few decades to gel.  Clear your calendars for this rewarding weekend! My trip also included a stop in the bustling city of Istanbul, and I plan to visit again very soon.  Curator Marian Luntz in Adana, Turkey. For opening night on Friday, seasoned filmmaker Çagan Irmak presents his moving new film Whisper If I Forget, followed by a reception in his honor.

  8. Around Houston: Turrell in a Day

Jul 3, 2013 - the sky’s natural light feels like a calming, physical presence. (I’m a late sleeper myself, so I’m lucky they also have the light sequence at sunset!) It’s easy to make an entire day of enjoying Turrell’s work here in town, whether you’re a visitor or a Houstonian who has never gotten around to all these (free) sights: Sunrise: Twilight Epiphany, Rice University Every

  9. hang@MFAH: A Place for Teens

Jun 27, 2013 - Just over a year ago, I embarked on a challenge to create a teen program that happened outside of school. We wanted a program that encouraged teens to decide for themselves that the MFAH was a cool enough place to be during their limited free time, so we decided on the HOMAGO (hanging out, messing around, geeking out) model.

  10. A Collector of People and Places

Jun 4, 2012 - More than 50 years after Abrams purchased his first drawing, it’s clear to see he doesn’t regret it for a minute. On a private tour of the galleries, members of the MFAH patron group Art + Paper had the unique opportunity to hear George Abrams’s lively anecdotes about each of the works. For Abrams, one of the great things about drawings is that they are often more spontaneous than paintings and reflect the thinking of the artist at a particular moment or time.
