Caught in the Act | Drew Bacon on William Kentridge and the Art of Stop-Motion

August 24, 2023

Stop-motion animation is vital to the history of film, from its first experimental decade to the 2022 movie Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. Artist Drew Bacon talks with curator Alison de Lima Greene, focusing on his personal engagement with the stop-motion animations of William Kentridge. Bacon also demonstrates how he has employed stop-motion in his own video projections and installations, while celebrating the very real labor that lies behind the magic of this process.

About the Speaker
Drew Bacon is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice centers on reconstituting archival and found print materials into other artistic forms. The finished works create new auras and spaces for the original material, probing their cognitive functions and cultural significance. Bacon’s work has been exhibited in solo shows with Pazda Butler Gallery; featured in the FotoFest biennial; and collected by the MFAH. His short films have been screened at film festivals such as Oaxaca Film Festival and Esto es Para Esto. He holds a BFA in painting and drawing with a minor in art history from Pratt Institute in New York and an MFA in experimental animation from California Institute of the Arts.

General admission to the MFAH is free on Thursdays, courtesy of Shell USA, Inc.
