The Model and the Marriage Broker

Thelma Ritter: Hollywood’s Favorite New Yorker

Film historian Christina Putnam introduces the screening.

For this comedy, director George Cukor cast Thelma Ritter in a rare leading role. She shines as busy matchmaker Mae Swasey, who helps her clients find romance even though her own personal life is in disarray. When she meets Kitty Bennett (Jeanne Craine), a beautiful model, Mae can’t resist disentangling Kitty from a married man to fix her up with someone deemed more suitable (Scott Brady).
