Lecture | New Ground: Contemporary Design and Architecture at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne

May 1, 2025
As Australia’s leading museum, the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in Melbourne has captured global attention through its ambitious curatorial work in contemporary design and architecture. From commissioning bold new works and building its collection to staging the landmark exhibition NGV Triennial and Melbourne Design Week, the NGV is redefining how museums engage with design practice in shaping culture and the built environment.

In this lecture, Simone LeAmon, curator of contemporary design and architecture at the NGV, offers an inside look at the museum’s approach to design and architecture. She discusses how the NGV fosters experimentation, amplifies emerging voices, and collaborates with designers to drive dialogue, innovation, and new modes of audience engagement. Featuring work from both Australian and international practitioners, the talk highlights how contemporary design continues to shape cultural discourse and reflect the values and complexities of the times.
