A Conversation with Photographer Dawoud Bey

A Conversation with Photographer Dawoud Bey

On the opening day of Dawoud Bey: An American Project, the artist talks with photography curator Malcolm Daniel about the work featured in the exhibition as well as upcoming projects.

The retrospective An American Project introduces the deeply humanistic photographs of Dawoud Bey into a long-running examination of what it means to represent America with a camera. Spanning the breadth of Bey’s career, the presentation ranges from his earliest street portraits in Harlem in the 1970s to his recent historical explorations: the Underground Railroad and Louisiana plantations.
