Boston’s Monet Mania

Boston’s Monet Mania

Presented by George Shackelford in conjunction with the exhibition Incomparable Impressionism from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

In the 19th century, Boston critics were at first highly skeptical of Claude Monet’s work, labeling him one of the “mad outlaws, the Impressionists!” But by the early 1880s, his paintings were being eagerly exhibited and collected in Boston, a city where the rugged landscapes of the French Barbizon School had once reigned supreme. And by 1892, a group of Monet enthusiasts in Boston had organized the artist’s first solo exhibition in America.

This lecture tells the story of the “Monet-mad” artists and collectors who made the collection of Monet paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, so impressive.

About the Speaker George Shackelford is deputy director of the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth. Previously, he was chair of the art of Europe at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and curator of European art at the MFAH.
