New Angles on Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon
Presented by critic-in-residence Karen Schiff, in conjunction with the 2022 Core Exhibition
This lecture offers new ways of looking at Pablo Picasso’s famous 1907 painting Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (The Young Ladies of Avignon), which changed the course of modern art. The presentation explores hidden figures, spatial illusions, and a blurring of the conventional separation between the seer and the seen. New perspectives prompt not only a reconsideration of the iconic artwork, but also an examination of assumptions about engaging with art and with people.
Core Program lectures are open to the public, and admission is free. This event takes place in Favrot Auditorium at the Glassell School of Art. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

About the Speaker
Karen Schiff is an artist, writer, and educator. As a critic-in-residence in the 2021–2022 class of the Core Program, she is reinterpreting Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon.
