Gallery Talk at Rienzi “J. & W. Cary’s Terrestrial Globe”
Presented by Christine Gervais, director of Rienzi and curator of decorative arts
“J. & W. Cary’s Terrestrial Globe”
Globes became increasingly popular during the 18th century, serving practical uses such as the recording of new discoveries and as educational tools for astronomers. Terrestrial globes not only figured into the development of global geography, but they were also used by rulers in drawing their claims to territorial possessions in newly discovered, distant territories.
