#1 | Best Movies of 2021
“A masterpiece about life and death and art . . . a work of pure cinema.” —Manohla Dargis, New York Times

One of 2021’s most-awarded films, Drive My Car is an immersive, character-driven drama about a happily married stage actor/director whose life is turned upside down when his playwright wife dies. He accepts a directing assignment from a theater festival in Hiroshima, where he is assigned a female driver with whom he develops a close bond. Director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi mines the stories of the ensemble cast and crew, creating a truly absorbing narrative, full of unexpected revelations.

Drive My Car made history as the first Japanese film ever to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. It is also nominated for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best International Feature. The 2022 Oscars ceremony takes place March 27.
