Jamal Cyrus visits the MFAH to present this talk in the Core Program Lecture Series. The noted Houston-based artist draws on the languages of collage and assemblage, as well as the cultural politics embedded within Black American music. His work pursues sculpture as a series of metaphysical encounters, and he is engaged with an aesthetic practice that aims to transform mundane materials and objects into rich, densely packed networks of meaning and purpose.

About the Speaker
Jamal Cyrus has won several awards, most recently the prestigious Driskell Prize in 2020. He has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, including Jamal Cyrus: The End of My Beginning at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles; Slowed and Throwed: Records of the City Through Mutated Lenses at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston; and Direct Message: Art, Language, and Power at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. He has also exhibited as a member of the artist collective Otabenga Jones and Associates.
