About the Speakers
Tomashi Jackson combines painting, printmaking, and sculpture with archival research in areas of public infrastructure policy. The work interrogates intersections between formal languages of visual art and political languages driving histories of segregation, voting rights, education, transportation, labor, and housing in the United States. Jackson’s work is included in collections such as the Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, Baltimore Museum of Art, High Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, Pérez Art Museum, and Studio Museum in Harlem. She lives and works in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Nyugen Smith is a Caribbean American artist who works primarily in mixed-media drawing, assemblage, and performance. In his practice he is interested in world-building through the lens of Blackness, informed by ritual, memory, language, history, and art-making processes that prioritize the use of previously used materials, the body, and play. His work has been presented at the Pérez Art Museum, Blanton Museum, Frist Art Museum, Newark Museum, and Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, among other institutions. He is based in Jersey City, New Jersey.
