Ars Lyrica | “From China with Love” at Rienzi

Concert | From China with Love: Musical Chinoiseries in 17th- and 18th-Century Europe

Ars Lyrica returns to Rienzi for this special event. Prior to the performance, Rienzi assistant curator Misty Flores talks with Ars Lyrica curator and harpsichordist Mario Aschauer about European imaginations of China.

Exotic decorations on cabinets, porcelain vessels, and embroideries imported from China inspired a popular design trend in Baroque Europe, one reflected in various objects in the Rienzi Collection and on the harpsichord used in this concert. Musical selections by Christoph Willibald Gluck, Teodorico Pedrini, Henry Purcell, and Jean-Philippe Rameau illustrate how composers of the time created equally lavish-sounding textures.

Performers
Mario Aschauer, harpsichord
Manami Mizumoto, violin
Josefien Stoppelenburg, soprano
