A Weekend of Tantalizing Turkish Cinema
Mar 16, 2015 - Next we firmed up two films I saw in Adana: the entertaining documentary Jazz in Turkey, and the dark comedy Why Can’t I Be Tarkovsky? Why Can't I Be Tarkovsky? I was fortunate enough to delve deeper into Turkish cinema at the Golden Boll Film Festival last fall in Adana, Turkey. My trip also included a stop in the bustling city of Istanbul, and I plan to visit again very soon. Returning to Houston, I set about working with collaborators to choose the films for this year’s festival, which screens the weekend of March 27.

MFAH Teaching Artist Shares Her Inspirations for “Metamorphosis”
Sep 23, 2020 - I wouldn't be the artist I am today if it weren’t for my job at the MFAH. I recognized these items as the debris of personal disruption and anguish. When I looked closer, however, I saw the same objects as elements of artistic beauty and meaning. Walking my toddlers down Emancipation Avenue and Isabella Street, I saw the residue of hopelessness, pain, and misfortune.

Get #trill with Gibson & Join Us on Sundays for “MFAH on the Mat”
Apr 20, 2020 - I treat each practice uniquely as I explore what’s going on in my body, mind, and soul. Every time I practice, I feel much better after than when I started. I use yoga as my own way to reset and restore. Yoga gives me strength and confidence, and it helps me breathe deeper and more mindfully than any other activity. I hope you find similar peace from yoga, or any fitness and mindfulness practices you have. Namaste. Want to see more? Check out “MFAH on the Mat” every Sunday at 11 a.m. on Facebook Live.

Journey through the Egyptian Afterlife with Matthew Barney’s “River of Fundament”
Sep 1, 2016 - I visited Barney’s studio when he first arrived in New York City, while I was running the legendary alternative space White Columns. I have never found even the longest of Barney’s movies anything less than compelling, and I luxuriate in his exquisitely wrought image-making. I fully intended to do a project with Barney at White Columns, but that space was devoted to under-known artists, and Barney became famous quickly.

A “Mad Career” to Preserve and Share America’s Past at Bayou Bend
Jun 30, 2016 - We lived in the governor’s mansion when I was still a small child, and I knew the thrill of sleeping in Sam Houston’s great four-post bed. So maybe I could blame him, too, for my proclivities. It was not until 1920 that I had my first encounter with . . . an early American Queen Anne chair. This sent me on my mad career. I immediately enlisted the sympathy and interest of my brother Will. And thereupon I conceived the idea of forming a collection of early American furniture, which even then we intended to give eventually to some Texas museum.

Assembling “The Light Inside”
Aug 9, 2013 - RL: My name is Russ Lane, and I am a preparator (or art handler) at the MFAH. I started at the Museum in 2008. Before that, I studied agricultural journalism at Texas A&M. RL: I had read a lot about his work, and of course I was familiar with The Light Inside installed in the Wilson Tunnel here at the Museum. I’ve always really liked his “Skyspaces” as well. RL: Yes, I also used to work at a general aviation terminal in college. I got to talk to Turrell about it. SS: That would be noncommercial aviation? RL: Yes, for people like Turrell and my dad.

If “The Yellow Scale” were a drink ...
May 11, 2020 - So I went with gin and its complexities with botanicals. Then I thought ginger, lemon, lime, mango ... And so “Fugue in Yellow” was born. Here’s how you make it. First I thought “tropical,” and then: “What would make this artist peel himself away from his book to enjoy his cigarette with a drink?” He’s in a heightened state of yellow—bright, sunny, happy—but Kupka’s face almost says, “I am annoyed you bothered me.” Well, let’s fix that with a drink.

Gardening with the MFAH
Mar 24, 2020 - Mainly, because I see it weekly. I don’t go inside too often. Explore the gardens at Rienzi and Bayou Bend. I love camellias, azaleas, and magnolias in the spring. I love the smell of the Osmanthus in the fall and again in the spring. I love seeing the forgotten bloom of the spider lily. Each is unique and each is beautiful. I don’t believe the bees and butterflies we have are starving. I believe we just need more plants to help increase the numbers. Also, we need to stop spraying insecticide.

“Be Natural” Sheds Light on Women in Film
Apr 1, 2019 - I knew I had to help.” “I can’t recall how the campaign for Be Natural got on my radar, but when I saw the pitch video, I was shocked,” Mower says. A Legacy Uncovered I had the privilege of seeing Be Natural at the Cannes Film Festival last May along with Houston filmmaker Michelle Mower, who has made several independent features.
