A Legacy from Gee’s Bend: Lutisha Pettway’s “Bars” Quilt
Feb 8, 2019 - One of the objects on view in Mending is “Bars” Quilt, made around 1950 by Lutisha Pettway, a descendant of slaves from a plantation in Gee’s Bend, Alabama. Later on, when I was a good bit older, I bought cloth from the store sometime. I did my work by my own hand, by myself.” Pettway (1925–2001) was among a four-generation community of quilt makers in the hamlet of Gee’s Bend who became internationally recognized for their work after the 2001 touring exhibition The Quilts of Gee’s Bend.

My grandfather made a booster seat for me to use in the projection booth, and there I sat for hours watching films like Old Yeller, Attack of the 50-Foot Woman, Psycho, and Village of the Damned. A Texas Legacy: Selections from the William J. Highlights include a one-of-a-kind, intricately carved desk by Adolph Kempen; a monumental wardrobe by Johann Michael Jahn; and early Texas silver by Samuel Bell. Photography is not permitted in this exhibition. Hill Collection tells the story of early Texas decorative arts through a selection of furniture, drawings, paintings, pottery, silver, and other goods made between the mid-19th and early 20th centuries.

“Electrifying Design: A Century of Lighting” Debuts in February 2021 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
Jan 7, 2021 - a surface. Gino Sarfatti’s 1063 Floor Lamp (1954) was one of the earliest manufactured lamps that used a long tube bulb in a minimal composition. Its transformer serves both as a counterweight and a power source. Prouvé reduced the task lamp to a single globe bulb that projects a single blob of light to meet a user’s specific needs. Works influenced by Pop Art and the Radical Design movement introduced whimsical references.
