Houston just happens to have a delightful fall lined up for Anglophiles all around the city! In addition to the Second Folio, Harris Masterson also collected works of Shakespeare’s immediate contemporary Ben Jonson, who set the model for playwrights to produce their work in elaborate volumes.

Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: A Rare Sampler from the Bayou Bend Collection
Sep 19, 2018 - Hispanic Heritage Month—observed from September 15 to October 15—is an annual celebration of Hispanic and Latino contributions to our shared history and culture. Band samplers—narrow, long samplers that allow for plenty of room to practice—survived into the 1700s and 1800s, notably in Spain and its colonies. The Spanish words for sampler are dechado or muestra de bordado. At first, samplers were patterns for women to practice on, but by the 1600s, the primary purpose became embroidery exercises done by schoolgirls.

Virtual Cinema: A Summer in “Cane River”
Jul 19, 2020 - He was also fluent in French and well-versed in exploring black folks and our history through his documentary films. I didn’t see Cane River until recently. Underwriting for the MFAH film department is provided by Tenaris and the Vaughn Foundation. My dad’s girlfriend, who was from New Orleans, turned him on to the Cane River region and the stories that floated about for centuries.

The main character in Born with It is being bullied for being mixed race in Japan. Emmanuel, I know you lived in Asia for almost 10 years. Is this short film autobiographical? For the film, I was thinking about the idea of not being seen for who you think you are. Highlighting bullying is a way to show how difficult it is when someone is different.
