Art Films & Summer Sipping
Jun 2, 2020 - It’s a refreshing drink, best enjoyed while watching any movie or when you’re outdoors enjoying clear skies and a breeze. Don’t be scared of Scotch in a cocktail. It has its place, and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Strain into a chilled glass. Optional: Garnish with orange peel and a light sprinkle of cayenne pepper. Beverage Backstory I love this recipe because it is new and refreshing. The rum may be a little harder to find, but larger stores will have it. Cheers! Enter the Cinematic World of Japan’s Music Man
Jun 18, 2018 - The Eagle and the Hawk is probably the least musical-like of the three, but a repeated musical motif is a key part of the story. The Winner, showing on June 29, is a boxing–ballet mashup inspired by “The Red Shoes.” The Stormy Man, on June 23, does double duty as a feature in our Jazz on Film series! Did he develop a following internationally? His films were popular in Japan. The Stormy Man actually saved the Nikkatsu studio from bankruptcy! But he was never regarded as a master like Akira Kurosawa.

Striking Different Notes: Two Magnificent Still Lifes from the MFAH Collections
Jul 21, 2019 - In a note of additional gravity, a solo apple perches on a lute, solemnly conjuring a reminder of original sin. Gorgeous objects and musical instruments lie strewn on a vividly hued carpet, but Munari’s use of brighter colors with more contrast results in a livelier tone than seen in the Bettera painting, alluding to a dissimilar theme. Their identically titled Still Life with Musical Instruments both depict a seemingly haphazard arrangement of musical instruments and attractive objects painted in a refined, realistic manner.

White Nights (Le notti bianche)
Shot before La dolce vita and 8 ½ made him an international star, Marcello Mastroianni plays a lonely drifter who meets a woman (Maria Schell) on a Tuscan bridge in Livorno. As they spend nights wandering the misty streets, a delicate romance unfolds that quickly entangles them in a web of longing and self-delusion. The achingly romantic White Nights is an exquisite adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novella, transforming the shattering tale of two restless souls into a black-and-white dream.

Take Mom to See “Ron Mueck” This Mother’s Day
May 4, 2017 - Like Mother and Child from a decade earlier, this burdened mother has a glazed, vacant look in her eyes. Mueck rarely has a specific person in mind for his sculptures, but Woman with Shopping (2013), one of his newest works, was inspired by a woman he saw on a London street corner waiting for the traffic light to turn green. She is also a monumental presence at more than 16 feet long!
