Jan 20, 2016 - “In 1950 the Museum awarded John Biggers the purchase prize at our 25th Annual Houston Artists Exhibition for The Cradle, a monumental drawing that remains both the starting point and cornerstone of our African American collection Recent years have seen terrific new acquisitions of works by artists who have lived in our city; Dawolu Jabari Anderson, Trenton Doyle Hancock, and Mequitta Ahuja, to name only a few, have played a major role in giving our collection “The MFAH’s history of collecting African American art is closely tied to our immediate community,” Alison de Lima Greene added.

Apr 8, 2026 - 2014); his suspended sailing vessels, which summon up both trans-Atlantic histories of enslavement and current refugee crises (2016–2022); and his reimagining of commemorative equestrian monuments: Sikandar (2010), Ambassador 1 “Wit, passion, beauty and compassion, and deep research inform this work, which directly engages our attention and pushes us to challenge long-held beliefs and reinvent them in thought-provoking ways.” “It is a pleasure to collaborate with our partners at the Yale Center for British Art to bring the work of Hew Locke to Houston audiences,” comments Gary Tinterow, director and Margaret Alkek Williams chair of the MFAH.
