    Nov 18, 2019 - I chose to relocate in Houston, and I worked for Shell for 34 years as a refinery operator. When I retired, I wanted to do art and see if I was good at it. You have to figure out, “What do I see?” and “What do I want to say about myself?” I paint and I draw every day. My life is now filled with making art, with being creative. My story began in New York City, where I was born and raised. I went into the U.S. Air Force and after that studied to be a commercial photographer—until the cold weather drove me out!

I think that’s where my love of film began. I also remember my parents taking me to a matinee of Gone with the Wind at the downtown Loews Theater when I was about 10! Yes, I was at several parties with her in private homes and clubs. The most meaningful conversation we had was when I asked about Dana Andrews, her Laura costar.

    Apr 9, 2020 - I surprised myself in trying to narrow my favorite works down to five; I would have been more comfortable with 25! I picked the works that represent true, lifetime masterpieces by each of the artists. This July marks my 10th year as dean, but I started teaching at Glassell almost 30 years ago. I was initially hired to teach the “Investigations in Charcoal” workshop, my proverbial “foot in the door.” I still teach a couple classes, but mostly I spend my day building future course catalogs, studying the ever-changing demands of a varied curriculum, and making myself available to students and faculty.

    Mar 3, 2016 - I do not remember anything about the interview except the first thing I said was, “Oh, you are so young!” and then I thought to myself, “Well, that was not the right thing to say!” I can still hear the sound of the canvas canopy loudly flapping about. I remember being completely in awe of the moment and of the many important people there. I also remember being in the house that day. I could not believe it—he was someone whose books I had read and heard great stories about, and he was on the floor and I was standing right there! Fifty years later, you’re still an active Bayou Bend docent.

    Dec 1, 2017 - I felt from the very beginning, when I learned of this exhibition, that this was a place for my work, because I had a long history of this theme. What is significant about having your work on view in Houston? I talked with Mesa-Bains about the installation. What do you hope visitors take away from Transparent Migrations? I think it’s a work that invites contemplation. I am a first-generation Chicano [a person of Mexican origin or descent], and one of the roles I occupied was that of someone who made ofrendas—so most of my early work was centered around the home altar.
