Jacolby Satterwhite: A Metta Prayer
The expansive multimedia installation fuses choreography, video, animation, lighting, and music to reimagine a kaleidoscopic, computer-generated world. Satterwhite (born 1986) draws inspiration from the Buddhist Metta prayer to build a narrative that rebels against the conventions of commercial video games. The immersive exhibition now brings the artist’s virtuosic work to Houston. A Metta Prayer constructs a digital space that represents love, joy, and resilience.

Sarah Charlesworth: Arc of Total Eclipse, February 26, 1979
She rose to prominence in the late 1970s and early 1980s alongside Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman, Laurie Simmons, and other artists of the “Pictures Generation.” Charlesworth (1947–2013) came of age artistically in the 1960s and early 1970s as the rigorous and pristine objects of Minimalism gave way to the dematerialized art of Conceptualism. The newspapers—mostly small-town journals—represent locations from Portland, Oregon, to Thunder Bay, Ontario. Each tells a slightly different story about the same event through the picture selection and layout.

Eye on Houston invites students to offer a glimpse into their daily lives, experiences, and personal stories. This year, the 21st annual presentation expands to include a greater number of Houston communities. The annual exhibition Eye on Houston: High School Documentary Photography is a collaboration between the Museum and area high schools to document and celebrate the diversity of Houston’s neighborhoods.

Ewan Gibbs: Arlington National Cemetery
Nov 5, 2012 - The exhibition also presents 36 photographs from the MFAH collection by artists who served as inspiration to Gibbs. British artist Ewan Gibbs (born 1973) trained his expert eye on the iconic site to create a series of 16 drawings based on photographs taken during previous visits. On View November 11, 2012–February 10, 2013 Overview This exhibition of drawings and photographs opens on Veterans Day and recognizes the impact of a visit to Arlington National Cemetery.
