  2. Paradise Underfoot: A 17th-Century Carpet from Iran

    Carpets in the Islamic world defined different spaces in the lives of their owners, such as a sacred space for prayer or an imagined space for brilliant ornamentation in a simple, nomadic dwelling.  Another role was as a reverent space for the privileged or wealthy to sit, as demonstrated in the accompanying painting Layla and Majnum in School. This magnificent carpet exemplifies the “golden age” of Persian carpet weaving—rugs created in the 16th and 17th centuries, renowned for their beauty and durability.

  3. English Taste: The Art of Dining in the Eighteenth Century

    The 18th-century English dinner table was a feast for the eyes. Raffald’s illustration “Directions for a Grand Table” from 1769 serves as the design template for the installation. This exhibition is organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The first special exhibition ever held at Rienzi, the MFAH house museum for European decorative arts, English Taste treats you to a dining-room extravaganza typical of a 1760s English country house.
