Oct 6, 2015 - The program coincides with Mark Rothko: A Retrospective, on view now through January 24, 2016, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Tickets are on sale now and available on a first-come, first-served basis online at www.mfah.org/conversations or on site at any Museum admissions desk. “Conversations with the Director” is a series of talks with Tinterow, who engages an eclectic roster of guests in one-on-one conversations about the arts.

Ancient Luxury and the Roman Silver Treasure from Berthouville
Highlights of the exhibition include the “Patera of Rennes,” a shallow libation bowl that remains one of the few surviving examples of Roman gold tableware; the “Shield of Scipio,” a silver-and-gold plate depicting the Homeric This cache—accidentally discovered by a French farmer in the early 19th century and recently conserved by the J. hero Achilles, extracted from the Rhone River in 1656; and a bejeweled cameo of the Emperor Trajan, intricately carved from multilayered sardonyx.

Map of the Ten Thousand Countries of the Earth
Ricci (1552–1610), a Jesuit missionary who spent more than 30 years in China, studied science, mathematics, and geography. The map also includes a table showing the distance between the planets and the earth, and explanations of varying lengths of days and nights. The map was engraved by Li Zhizhao (1565–1630), a Chinese mathematician, astronomer, and cartographer, and it was printed by Zhang Wentao of Hangzhou.
