Long shadows are cast by a thick, warm light—often the last hour before sunset and the first hour before sunrise—known by many as the magic hour. It is this time when things appear more clearly and unconditionally as they are. The final scene of a film, the last confession, the long look before saying goodbye—it is here that belief, hope, and yearning stand out as unequivocally true. 

What follows is an unfolding, unraveling, and untethering through the exhibition space, like the proverbial beginning or end of a day. The artmaking distills stories through narrative tools: anecdotes, proverbs, idioms, and metaphors. Worlds are built, willed, and otherwise refused through the practices of each artist. The magic hour comes alive through the upheaval when the light changes. We adjust our eyes and ask the stories to transform, to grow legs and become tangible beings that live among us. 

Founded in 2014, BLOCK is a program for advanced students offered by the Glassell Studio School. Participants meet every Friday for seminar and critique with a variety of art professionals to collectively examine their practice and its place in our changing world. The invited guest curator for this exhibition is Erika Mei Chua Holum. 

Participating artists are Sebastian Anchante, Kristen Anton, Brent Fogt, Malika Galleron, Katie Hagar, Lucy Haslam, Juliette Hemingway, Kellie Lawrence, Rachelle LeBlanc, Katia Machado, John Maloney, and Justine Warburton.
