    Aug 22, 2019 - The call for help came September 6, 2017, from our trustee Sarah Trotty. We got it to be stable, to buy time, until the dedicated conservator, Scott Haskens, could be hired for the project. How does it look now? It looks wonderful! You can’t tell that there was any damage. Then, the Museum coordinated with our construction company, McCarthy, to patch the roof. Our conservators, led by Soni Bomford, started putting tissue facing on the fragile sections to stabilize them.

  2. Operating on Art: Treating Walker Evans’s “Banda Headdress”

    Aug 1, 2014 - My most recent project is a gelatin silver photograph by American artist Walker Evans (1903–1975), who is best known for his images of the Great Depression. Banda Headdress arrived in the MFAH conservation lab with a tear in the top right corner that made it unsafe for the object to be handled or displayed. MoMA commissioned Evans to document each sculpture and produce 17 portfolios and a traveling exhibition for the purpose of teaching students about African art history.

Just as with stains on clothing, immediate treatment is always best, and in the case of vandalism, swift removal is even more necessary to prevent attracting more vandalism. We did some quick spot tests to decide the best method for removal of the graffiti and waited for permission to proceed. By lunchtime it was well over 100 degrees outside, and the sculpture was even hotter.
