I’m proud to present the first award to Mexican photographer Yael Martínez, whose work addresses the violence of organized crime in his country. Presenting this in conjunction with the MFAH makes it especially meaningful.

  8. Dangerous Curves: A “Sculpted in Steel” Chat with Ken Gross

    Mar 30, 2016 - How did that come to be? Do vehicles still hold that same connotation today? In the 1920s and 1930s, stars’ agents, and public relations people for film studios, sought to portray their clients in every luxurious setting. I asked Ken some PG-rated questions to figure it out. Why do cars lend themselves so readily to sensuality? (Is it really just the curves?) Artists like Geo Ham (Georges Hamel) sketched fantastical shapes on wheels, and Figoni and Falaschi’s craftsmen were able to duplicate the designs in aluminum, to the delight of all who saw them.

    May 6, 2022 - The two that were removed from the Reichskanzlei in Berlin were transferred to the German state in Bonn. From Switzerland, Emden had them shipped to London and then Berlin, and back to Switzerland via London, in order to show the artworks to potential buyers in those cities. No new information has come to light to alter our conclusion that the 1938 sale initiated by Dr. Emden was voluntary.

    Dec 4, 2017 - Looking closely at the details on four ensembles—all featured in the exhibition and pulled from the Museum’s own permanent collection—reveals how he incorporated these influences. Looking to China for inspiration, he incorporated the ornate clasps on the coat to reference historic precedents in Eastern costume, and the fur trim evokes a romantic idea of Russia. Spanning the 1960s to the 2000s, these ensembles show the creative range of Oscar de la Renta, whose designs are regarded as ultimate expressions of femininity and elegance.
