Degas and the Laundress: Women, Work, and the Avant-Garde in 19th-Century Paris
On Thursdays, the Museum is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with free general admission. These working-class women were a visible presence in the French capital, washing and ironing in shops open to the street or carrying heavy baskets of clothing—some of the most difficult and poorly paid work at the time.

Sea of Ink, Forest of Pens: The Art of the Qurʾan in the Hossein Afshar Collection
copy the Ayat al-Kursi, or Throne Verse, a widely recited and inscribed Qurʾanic verse believed to offer protection over homes and families. The work highlights the rhythmic and performative quality of the calligraphic act by shifting the viewer’s attention from a word’s meaning to its sound. In addition, two contemporary works from the MFAH collection respond to the Qurʾan in unique ways. The Qurʾan is the Arabic-language earthly scripture of God’s divine, eternal speech.
