A Sneak Peek Inside the Core Residency Program
Oct 15, 2019 - Describe a typical day for a Core resident. I’m not sure there’s any such thing as a typical day! Most keep an incredibly active schedule with travel, teaching, and exhibition opportunities. The Core Program attracts applicants from all over the world, acting as a bridge between postgraduate training and the next stage of a professional career. You might find them in their studios developing a project or at the Museum’s Hirsch Library conducting research.

Capturing “Inverted Worlds”: A Talk with Vera Lutter
Feb 8, 2016 - I went to the lowest elevation, where it was most likely to flood, and a friend helped me find a room with a good view. There are a lot of factors going in to the decision where I set up my camera. For each photo, Lutter makes a massive pinhole camera by completely blacking out a room, shipping container, or specially constructed box, and opening a millimeter-wide hole to allow outside light to enter and images to form on I looked for a long time for the right hotel room with that iconic Times Square view, the one with Seventh Avenue and Broadway meeting. I’m quite high up, which gives me that view with a certain distance.

Paradise Underfoot: A 17th-Century Carpet from Iran
Gardens held great social significance, because they were seen as a luxury, as well as spiritual importance because of their allusions to a celestial paradise. Carpets in the Islamic world defined different spaces in the lives of their owners, such as a sacred space for prayer or an imagined space for brilliant ornamentation in a simple, nomadic dwelling. Another role was as a reverent space for the privileged or wealthy to sit, as demonstrated in the accompanying painting Layla and Majnum in School.
