  2. Extravagant Objects: Jewelry and Objets d’Art from the Masterson Collection

    From small, personal, functional objects to bejeweled adornments and extravagant sculptures meant simply to delight the eye, these creations showcase the artistic vision and innovations of their time. The objects’ forms and functions, and the elaborate decoration, illustrate changes in social customs and artistic development over three centuries: the 18th to 20th. For centuries, jewelry and objets d’art—luxurious objects made of precious and exotic materials—have been sought after by royals, aristocrats, and the affluent to demonstrate status, wealth, power, and taste.

  3. Richard Misrach: After Katrina

    Each canto within the series investigates specific aspects of the American West, from issues of water, to tourism, to the presence of the U.S. military. Just after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans in 2005, photographer Richard Misrach used a 4-megapixel pocket camera to capture messages left behind by evacuees. Commemorating the hurricane´s fifth anniversary, the exhibition Richard Misrach: After Katrina presents 69 photographs that Misrach has generously given to the MFAH.

This spring, I encourage you to seek out the Houston Latino Film Festival, WorldFest Houston, Literally Short, HAAPIFest, and QFest (for which the MFAH is one of the venues), to name a few. The series begins February 8 and continues after the awards ceremony, through March 3—giving MFAH audiences a chance to see whether they agree with the winners!
