    He was inspired to paint The Sugar Shack as a teenager, after sneaking into the Durham Armory dance hall. Barnes painted two versions of The Sugar Shack, which depicts dynamic, elongated figures dancing in a crowded Black music hall in segregated mid-century North Carolina. “Acquiring The Sugar Shack was for me the realization of a childhood dream,” Perkins said, adding that he knows the painting will be just as inspirational for all those who see it.

In 1925 Alban Berg based his first opera, Wozzeck, on the 1837 Georg Büchner play about a man’s life being destroyed by the casual sadism of military bureaucracy. “It is a radical opera. . . . All the hallucinations that Büchner writes for Wozzeck are things that would never be seen in the 1830s, but were literally there in the 1910s.”

    Kaitlin Rizzo is a writer, researcher, and translator working on a series of projects related to the life of Artemisia Gentileschi. Her work as a librettist has been featured at Ohio State University and the Kennedy Center’s Cartography Project. Created 400 years apart and displayed together, the paintings of Judith and Holofernes by Artemisia Gentileschi and Kehinde Wiley raise contemporary issues through a historical lens.
