Tazhib, the art of illumination, has been used in the Muslim world for over a millenium to enhance the beauty of the calligraphic and painted page with intricate naturalistic and geometric patterns.

This session of the Writers Remix Series focuses on the Galleries for Art of the Islamic Worlds in the Law Building. Local writers perform original works, all within the Museum galleries.

  6. Living with the Gods: Art, Beliefs, and Peoples

In museums, many great objects can lose their original purpose, which was spiritual. As a capstone for the Museum’s centennial year, British art historian and former museum director Neil MacGregor was invited to revisit his 2017 BBC radio series and book of the same title, bringing that vision to the MFAH collections

  7. Lecture | “Kinship & Community: Selections from the Texas African American Photography Archive”

    Plan Your Visit The lecture takes place in Lynn Wyatt Theater in the Kinder Building. He was shortlisted for the 2025 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize.   His books include Hardtack and I can’t stand to see you cry, which was nominated for the Paris Photo–Aperture Photobook of the Year and won the Rencontres d’Arles Louis Roederer Discovery Award.

  8. Recite: The Spoken Art of the Qurʾan

    Plan Your Visit Free with Museum admission. This event takes place in the Hossein Afshar Galleries for Art of the Islamic Worlds on Level 1 of the Law Building. He has served the Muslim community in a teaching capacity for 30 years. His current studies consist of theology, jurisprudence, and spirituality. This program is part of a series accompanying the installation Sea of Ink, Forest of Pens: The Art of the Qurʾan, on view in the Hossein Afshar Galleries for Art of the Islamic Worlds.

  9. Writers Remix Series | Juneteenth

    Plan Your Visit This program is included with Museum admission. The performances take place in the exhibition gallery on Level 3 of the Kinder Building. C.T. has been on the spoken word scene, believing it to be a great representation of Gulf Coast folklore, for 30 years. He founded a forum that, for a decade, combines dramatists, poets, singers, and musicians; sometimes sharing stories or creating new stories on the spot.

  10. Artists in Dialogue | Featuring “Multiplicity” Artists Tomashi Jackson & Nyugen Smith

    Plan Your Visit Admission is free. This event takes place in the Lynn Wyatt Theater, located in the Kinder Building.
