Glassell Lecture | Tsedaye Makonnen
Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Makonnen, born in Washington, D.C. to Ethiopian immigrants, is a mother, birthworker, and sanctuary builder whose practice centers around Black feminist theory, migration, and reproductive rights. Her light sculptures, acquired by the Smithsonian in 2021, are on view at the National Museum of African Art, and she recently completed a permanent commission for the Medieval gallery at the Walters.

GONZO247: Celebrating Community, Color & Vincent van Gogh
Mar 25, 2019 - GONZO was first exposed to graffiti art in 1985, and he was soon on his way to his pursuit of becoming a self-taught artist. He is well known as a pioneer in the graffiti and street-art culture of Houston. As a part of the Museum’s Spring Festival: Celebrating Colors on Saturday, March 30, we are excited to have renowned local street artist GONZO247 join the fun. The Nose

In this William Kentridge collaboration with New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Paulo Szot plays the man on a quest to become whole again, and the nose itself becomes a major character. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Dmitri Shostakovich’s 1928 opera The Nose reimagines the satirical 1836 short story by Nikolai Gogol about a man who wakes to find his nose is missing.

About the SpeakersJoseph Havel is a postmodernist American sculptor who served as director of the MFAH Glassell School of Art for three decades. Combining all media—sculptures, paintings, drawings, and photographs—the exhibition examines a central aspect of Giacometti’s oeuvre: his extraordinary, singular concern for the human figure.
