He is well known as a pioneer in the graffiti and street-art culture of Houston. As a part of the Museum’s Spring Festival: Celebrating Colors on Saturday, March 30, we are excited to have renowned local street artist GONZO247 join the fun. The Perfect Family: John Waters’s “Serial Mom” Meets the Art of “Always Greener”
Jan 14, 2019 - You’ll see the delightful downward spiral of a serial-killer mom, culminating with a courtroom scene. The jury is still out on whether Beverly goes free, but (spoiler alert!) Campy, outrageous, a little gory, but also somehow incredibly wholesome, the movie is perfectly aligned with the exhibition’s sensibility. Written and directed by iconic filmmaker John Waters, Serial Mom stars Kathleen Turner as Beverly Sutphin, a peppy housewife living in the Baltimore suburbs.

Moving beyond questions of attribution, the discussion traces artists, patrons, and practices across regions, revealing a shared visual culture shaped by movement and exchange. She has published writings on a range of topics in the history of South Asian art, including History of Early Stone Sculpture at Mathura and Pahari Paintings: Art and Stories.

He currently serves as a cantor at St. Cantor Phillip Phares leads a performance of sacred chanting in the Byzantine Orthodox Christian tradition. During the program, a local priest explains the symbolism and use of Orthodox liturgical vestments and implements.

Glassell Lecture | Tsedaye Makonnen
Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Makonnen, born in Washington, D.C. to Ethiopian immigrants, is a mother, birthworker, and sanctuary builder whose practice centers around Black feminist theory, migration, and reproductive rights. Her light sculptures, acquired by the Smithsonian in 2021, are on view at the National Museum of African Art, and she recently completed a permanent commission for the Medieval gallery at the Walters.
