  1. Operating on Art: Treating Walker Evans’s “Banda Headdress”

Aug 1, 2014 - My most recent project is a gelatin silver photograph by American artist Walker Evans (1903–1975), who is best known for his images of the Great Depression. Banda Headdress arrived in the MFAH conservation lab with a tear in the top right corner that made it unsafe for the object to be handled or displayed. MoMA commissioned Evans to document each sculpture and produce 17 portfolios and a traveling exhibition for the purpose of teaching students about African art history.

  4. An Incident in Bell Park

Aug 29, 2013 - And for us, doing our neighborly duty brought considerable satisfaction. Just as with stains on clothing, immediate treatment is always best, and in the case of vandalism, swift removal is even more necessary to prevent attracting more vandalism. We did some quick spot tests to decide the best method for removal of the graffiti and waited for permission to proceed. By lunchtime it was well over 100 degrees outside, and the sculpture was even hotter.

  5. MFAH Statement: “The Marketplace at Pirna,” c. 1764, Bernardo Bellotto

May 6, 2022 - Max Emden, a Swiss citizen and resident, initiated the voluntary sale of our painting, for which he was paid his asking price. The decision affirms our good title. In June 1938, Emden’s full asking price—60,000 Swiss francs for the three paintings—was agreed upon and the sale to Haberstock finalized and documented. No new information has come to light to alter our conclusion that the 1938 sale initiated by Dr. Emden was voluntary.
