After retiring from the US Army and abandoning an engineering career to search for purpose, Butler reignited a rich appreciation for Black history and a deep obsession with the Black archive. Born and raised in Detroit, she draws inspiration from her childhood growing up during the crack and AIDS epidemic that created devastating and lasting effects in Black and Indigenous American communities across the U.S.
