The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Presents “Shahzia Sikander: Extraordinary Realities” in Spring 2022
Dec 17, 2021 - We are pleased to bring back Sikander’s richly vibrant and varied work to the MFAH.” The final section of the exhibition includes work following Sikander’s 1997 move to New York, where she still lives. Her work became more expansive in its interpretation, and at the same time began to increase in scale as she combined and layered her tracing-paper drawings.

MFAH Announces Establishment of $50,000 Edelman Impact Award in Photography and First Winner
Apr 20, 2026 - “The Edelman Impact Award recognizes a photographer whose work doesn’t shy away from political or social issues. His work illustrates the resilience of Mexican communities, through a blend of documentary and conceptual photography. The award recipient and MFAH curatorial team will collaborate to make a selection of the recipient’s work to enter the museum’s collection.

Simone Leigh’s Monumental Bronze Sculpture “Satellite” Is Installed at the Nancy and Rich Kinder Building of the MFAH
Dec 4, 2023 - The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, is the first U.S. museum to acquire and install for permanent display this now-iconic work by the influential American artist. The first edition of Satellite was the centerpiece of Leigh’s project for the American Pavilion of the 59th Venice Biennale last year; Houston’s example is the second edition of this seminal work. About Simone LeighOver the past two decades, Simone Leigh’s work in video, installation and ceramic and bronze sculpture has explored ideas of race, beauty, and community in visual and material culture.

Jun 29, 2018 - How do the videos and designs work together? Anita Star: I think that without the videos, the pieces would be very difficult to understand! A big part of the work is showing the progress of how things are made. Laarman and Star chatted with me about their work, on view at the MFAH through September 16, and how design and technology can bring a positive glimpse into our future. Your work is driven by functionality, but people can’t exactly try out these objects in a museum setting. So, are these chairs comfortable? JL: Yeah, they are! You would be surprised!

May 13, 2020 - What you end up with is residual to the energy and work. When an audience can see a finished work and know what it took to get there, they have a deeper appreciation. What were the high points of the afternoon? How did the exhibition Vincent van Gogh: His Art in Life inspire the work of art you created at the festival? What I really liked was how the exhibition was laid out, starting with Van Gogh’s sketches. You have donated the work you created to the Eastwood Academy, and it will be installed once schools reopen. What does that mean to you? I grew up in Eastwood, a neighborhood in Houston’s East End.
