• Saving Art in the Wake of Hurricane Sandy

  Dec 12, 2012 - As team leader for AIC-CERT, I worked with art conservators from New York, California, Florida, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, responding to requests from artists and institutions for support and advice. After Hurricane Sandy made landfall in New York and New Jersey, significant flooding of low-lying areas resulted in a surprising degree of damage.  Steve Pine, from the MFAH Conservation Department, volunteered to go to New York City to assist with recovery efforts. He shares his insights.

• Care Like a Conservator: How to Preserve Your Treasures at Home

  Apr 7, 2020 - If you have something extra-valuable to you and your family, take it to a framer to replace the glass with UV-filtering Plexiglas. An important step of conservation is to slow down inevitable degradation and to prevent damage. Make sure to hang it with a padded hanger, to disperse the stress on the seams or fibers. Seal it in a bag to prevent insects from destroying the dress. Check the dress and the bag at least once a year.

• Carpet Connoisseurship: How to Look Closely at the “Wagner Garden Carpet”

  Oct 29, 2018 - Note how the orientation of the plants and animals changes from one half of the carpet to the other, and how this variation affects the overall symmetry.   Looking closely at the design, can you tell how many drawings were used to design this carpet and where they repeat? How do the artists manage to create such a convincing illusion?     Symmetry Is this carpet symmetrical? Carpets like this one were planned out using a scale drawing, and knotted entirely by hand.

  Prühl attended the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle, Germany, and returned to lead its jewelry and metalsmithing department for many years. Her expressive compositions and seemingly simple gestures belie a complexity and degree of craftsmanship that is unmatched in contemporary practice. A celebration of sculptural form and material mastery, The Jewelry of Dorothea Prühl marks the first U.S. exhibition dedicated to the German artist.
