  6. Gifts from the Past: The Isabel Brown Wilson Collection

    Use your cell phone as you tour the exhibition, and look for the “Guide by Cell” logos in the gallery. Houston native Isabel Brown Wilson had a passion for art. A noted philanthropist and art collector, she became an MFAH Trustee in 1979 and served as the Museum’s Chairman of the Board from 2001 to 2007. For Wilson, the excitement of collecting was not only the joy of possessing a beautiful object, but also the fascination of discovering the links between that object and its place in history.

  7. The Cyrus Cylinder and Ancient Persia: A New Beginning

    A touchstone of civilization, the Cyrus Cylinder is truly an object of world heritage, produced for a Persian king and seen and studied for more than 130 years in the British Museum. Pick up the optional audio tour for $3 at the admissions desk or at the cart just outside the gallery space. Valued throughout the world, the Cyrus Cylinder is such a symbol of tolerance and respect for different peoples and different faiths that a copy is on display at the United Nations in New York.

    Jan 4, 2023 - It will wrap the final gallery and provide the setting for the final works in the exhibition, including a John Cage music box. In particular the concepts of emptiness, repetition, and meaninglessness and how, in seeming nothingness there is great potential for the profound are evoked. The exhibition also includes Hakuin’s One Hundred “Kotobuki” (1767), a large-scale calligraphy that displays the character for “longevity” written in 100 different styles of seal script.
