Art for the Mind and Spirit
Sep 7, 2012 - Anyone who knows anything about Houston knows that our city is famous for its massive, state-of-the-art Medical Center. The children are not always able to visit the museum in person, so Art for the Mind and Spirit has to be creative with its teaching materials. “What I take away with me from every visit is the awareness of just how much the artistic process can affect a child’s mood in a positive way. I see their self-confidence increase and their spirits uplifted.”

Feb 27, 2019 - The artist’s fascination with the theory of complementary colors appears in the effects of yellow against purple (now faded to blue) and green. —Vincent van Gogh Vincent van Gogh sought solace in the natural world, to which he returned time and again for artistic inspiration. Cobalt Blue For the background of Vase with Gladioli and Chinese Asters, Van Gogh used his favorite cobalt blue. In comparison, the brushstrokes give the impression of a monochrome, flecked wallpaper.

The Art of the Short Film
Sep 14, 2015 - Filmgoers receive a ballot and vote for their favorite film and actor; watch for our announcement of the winners here and on social media. Quite often our audiences' taste aligns with the favorites worldwide. Martin Scorsese memorably interviewed his parents early in his career for a short film, Italianamerican. Short films have always been part of the Museum's year-round offerings, and our audiences enjoy them very much. Since we have several shorts programs coming up, I've been thinking about short-form filmmaking lately.

Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Houston Cinema Arts Festival
Oct 26, 2018 - The opening-night film for this year’s festival, screening on November 8, is a documentary musical. Maria by Callas is catnip for opera fans. Another coup is Roma, the new film by Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity, Y tu Mamá También) that has bowled over the critics. Opening-night films have often featured musical performances, which I like to add in order to accentuate the liveness of our events.
