Julie Dash’s rapturous vision of Black womanhood and vanishing ways of life in the turn-of-the-century South was the first film directed by an African American woman to receive a wide release. Awash in gorgeously poetic, sun-dappled images that are at once dreamlike and precise, Daughters of the Dust forges a radical new visual language rooted in Black femininity and the rituals of Gullah culture.

Sep 15, 2020 - The trapezoidal concrete Kinder Building is clad in vertical glass tubes that emit a soft glow at night in a pattern across its facades. A windowed gallery facing Main Street on this level includes Lezart I (1989), a monumental configuration of embroidered silk, metal objects, and cast-metal lizards by Brazilian artist Tunga, adjacent to the Museum’s historic 1965 The three inaugural works will be The Hydrospatial City (1946–72), a hovering, utopian vision for an architecture in outer space by Argentinean artist Gyula Kosice; Caper, Salmon to White: Wedgework (2000), a light-filled environment

The MFAH Has Acquired 187 Superb Indian Textiles from the Renowned Collection of Banoo and Jeevak Parpia
May 21, 2025 - The exhibition is curated by Rosemary Crill, former senior curator at the V&A, London, and Amy Poster, consulting curator, MFAH. Over five centuries, a prosperous maritime trade in Indian textiles supplied these fabrics to Southeast Asia, Europe and Japan. The Parpias’ focus on singular works exemplifying traditional forms and techniques offers a comprehensive view of Indian textile history.
