    Feb 16, 2012 - ” Visit Bayou Bend to see the sampler in person, and prepare to be inspired. The Oblate sisters founded a school that embraced a curriculum similar to schools for white girls of the time: preparing students to run their own households, work as servants, or support themselves with sewing skills. Bayou Bend’s new acquisition serves as a window to a seldom-seen segment of U.S. history: when young African American girls struggled to find a place for themselves during the tumultuous pre-Civil-War environment.

  9. Ewan Gibbs: Arlington National Cemetery

    Working from unit to unit (bottom to top, left to right), he transfers the imagery to another gridded sheet of paper by making marks approximating the tonal values. In addition to the drawings, this presentation includes 36 images from the MFAH photography collection by artists who have inspired Gibbs. Since the early 1990s, Gibbs (born 1973) has used a unique pictorial language based on knitting and crochet patterns to transform photographs into drawings.

    Art students from all over Europe flocked to Paris to be trained at the Académie des Beaux-Arts or one of the many private studios. Impressionism is considered a fundamentally French artistic movement, but the international reputation of Paris as the world´s leading art center inevitably led to the dissemination of this style to other countries. Although none of the three was exclusively a landscape artist, their landscapes present an opportunity to trace the development of a particular kind of German Impressionism through works of the highest quality.
