This lecture complements the exhibition From India to the World: Textiles from the Parpia Collection.
Art historian Ruth Barnes explores the cultural and historical aspects of textiles in Indonesian societies. In addition to Southeast Asia’s own history of weaving, the region has responded to outside influences from elsewhere in Asia. The integration of South Asian textiles in maritime Southeast Asia, in particular, is a major theme.
Joining the conversation are textile collectors Banoo and Jeevak Parpia, and consulting curator Amy Poster. They provide global perspectives on textiles; look at the revitalization of Indian hand-loomed textiles; and discuss bridging arts and craft.

About the Speaker
Ruth Barnes has written extensively on Indonesian weaving and related art forms. She is the Thomas Jaffe Curator of Indo-Pacific Art at the Yale University Art Gallery and was previously textile curator at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England. Her publications include Indian Block-Printed Textiles in Egypt: The Newberry Collection in the Ashmolean Museum and Five Centuries of Indonesian Textiles.
