The 2023–2024 Core Program Lecture Series presents a talk by Julia Phillips.
About the Speaker
Julia Phillips works in ceramics and metal to create objects that are intimately connected to the body. Though evocative of physical functions and experiences, her work highlights power relations between individuals—and between individuals and institutions—functioning as a metaphor for social and psychological experiences.
Born in Hamburg, Germany, Phillips lives and works in Chicago and Berlin. She has had solo exhibitions at MoMA PS1 in New York and the Kunstverein Braunschweig in Germany, and her work was featured in the Berlin Biennial (2018) and New Museum Triennial (2018). Her work has been shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Museu de Arte de São Paulo; and Studio Museum in Harlem, among other institutions. Phillips was included in the 59th Venice Biennale’s central exhibition, The Milk of Dreams.
