Inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen tale, this iconic melodrama focuses on Victoria Page (dancer Moira Shearer in her first film role), a young ballerina cast by obsessive Russian impresario Lermontov (Anton Walbrook) to star in his ballet The Red Shoes. Like her character, Victoria is irresistibly drawn to dancing, but her life becomes torn between love and art. Shot in glorious Technicolor, The Red Shoes—from legendary filmmakers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger—won Oscars for art direction and music.

About the Presenter on October 13
Elizabeth Klett is professor of literature at the University of Houston–Clear Lake, where she teaches courses on drama, women’s literature, genre fiction, film, and adaptation studies. She is the author of two books: Choreographing Shakespeare: Dance Adaptations of the Plays and Poems and Cross-Gender Shakespeare and English National Identity. Klett is currently writing about adaptations of fairy tales (including The Red Shoes) for dance and film.
