Claudia Cardinale: The Indomitable
October 7–29, 2023
The Museum resumes a popular tradition this fall with an Italian film retrospective organized by our esteemed colleagues at the legendary Cinecittà in Rome. This year it’s a celebration of actress Claudia Cardinale (born in Tunisia in 1938), whose beauty and talent have made a strong impression in countless films. Selections include highlights from her early career, as well as her iconic roles in 8 1/2, The Leopard, and Once Upon a Time in the West. Don’t miss the chance to hear guest presenter Carolyn Pfeiffer reflect on working as Cardinale’s assistant when Pfeiffer introduces The Leopard on October 22. A new commemorative publication, Claudia Cardinale: The Indomitable, is available in the Hirsch Library.
Organized by Camilla Cormanni and Paolo Ruggiero, with thanks to Marco Cicala and Germana Ruscio, Cinecittà.
Generous support has been provided by the Vaughn Foundation and Consulate General of Italy in Houston.
Special thanks to our cultural partner Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles, Professor Alessandro Carrera from the University of Houston, and Kate MacKay, UC Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive.
